New location

Barefoot @ Barnabas

Following closure of our Charles St., Newport, studio at the end of April 2019 we'll be working from a workshop in the grounds of Barnabas Arts House.

Please see the following Google Map that shows the new venue relative to our old location: we will not be offering drop-in pottery painting at the new location. Please contact us if you want to arrange some pottery painting, ceramics workshops, or other art or craft sessions.

How to find us

The map above should show everything you need to find us (or use multimap for a zoom-able OS map, or Google maps if above map is not displayed). Just phone us if you need directions, we'll be happy to help.

By car ...

Newport is in South Wales about 7 miles east of Cardiff. The best route if you are unfamiliar with Newport is probably to travel to J27 ('High Cross') on the M4. From J27 follow signs for Newport City Centre. You'll travel along Risca Road initially. Straight on at the roundabout. Stay on this road, passing two sets of traffic lights. You'll pass the Cathedral (St.Woolos) on your right and then bear left and head downhill. Turn right at the Red Lion pub and you're on Charles Street!. We're a few doors down on the left opposite the park gates.

Satnav users: please note that usually a Satnav/GPS will want to bring you to Junction 28 or Junction 24 of the M4. Either of those routes is fine if you know where you're going but the Satnav tends to get lost with some of the shorter roads particularly around the town centre. If you don't know Newport come in from Junction 27 if you can, the route that way is really easy.

Parking

There is a large pay-and-display car park very close by, on Stow Hill. You can park at St.Woolos Cathedral (top of Stow Hill) for free for a couple of hours (check signs, some spaces are 1 hour). You may also be able to park on Charles Street itself, but don't forget to check the time restrictions and beware of road-markings. As of 2012 council car parks are 10p for 2 hours - go down Charles Street past the studio and turn right, you'll see a Newport City Council multi-storey car-park in front of you beyond the next junction, go under it and then turn right again to get in.

There is on street parking for disabled badge holders just off Charles Street. Go down past the studio and turn right and the parking is on your left. Please be sure to check restrictions for yourself; at the time of writing the allowance is 3 hours for authorised cars.

By train or bus ...

The train station is at the top of the map, bus station at the right. It's about 5 minutes walk from each. Some buses stop outside St.Woolos Primary School which is opposite the top end of Charles Street.

By bike or foot ...

From Newport city centre on the main pedestrianised shopping street find John Frost Square and the Library and Museum entrance. From John Frost Square head past Vacara's chip shop and keep going up the road between The Body Shop and TSB Bank. Carry on up the hill past the Job Centre, keep going a few more metres and Barefoot Ceramics is on your right next to an archway and opposite Diverse Music.

There are cycle racks on Charles Street itself, opposite the Job Centre. These are large enough to lock up a motorcycle or scooter, though there is a slight incline.

Food?

We serve hot and cold drinks and light snacks (cookies, flapjacks, chocolate bars ...) but not sandwiches or hot food. If you're looking for a meal there are 3 cafes on our street (Charles Street) and other places to eat in town which is only a stones throw away. We can arrange for a light-buffet or high-tea or similar food if you'd like it. We only allow food from outside to be eaten in the premises by arrangement.

  • The Secret Garden - range of meals, particularly excellent sandwiches, 2 doors up from us
  • Monet's Cafe
  • Vacara's Chip shop
  • Hunky Dorys - vegetarian/vegan food
